You all know that I love the New York Post. I mean, it’s the only paper where you find out that Eva Longoria is dating Penelope Cruz’s little brother. That Ryan Phillippe is handling well his ex-wife’s engagement to some agent guy who’s sadly not Jake Gyllenhaal. And that Jon Gosselin isn’t happy that Kate is taking the kiddos to Australia.

And they report some less import stuff too.

But on the front page this week, is a huge headline, “Should the leader of the free world dress like this – even on vacation?” With this photo…

The New York Post is all in a tizzy because Obama is the FIRST president to wear flip flops. Or at least the first one to get caught wearing them.  I’m sure just before Monica swaggered into the Oval Office with her best blue dress, Clinton said, “Do you mind if I change into something more comfortable – like my Havaianas flip flops?” Or at least that’s the story I heard.

Anyway, I think Obama looks casual chic in his flip flops and what the hell else is the guy supposed to wear on vacation in Hawaii? Crocs? Bush numero dos has already been there, done that.

That picture is tough to take. Rachel Zoe – where are you? Rip the black socks off that man.

Anyway, I’m just a little disappointed in the Post and would prefer if they’d get off Obama’s case because he’s actually got some style. Unlike… um… this guy…

Although to be fair, this photo was taken in 1996. I think we were all wearing our white logo t-shirts tucked into our huge red shorts back then. Weren’t we?

So New York Post, you know I love you. In fact, I’m obsessed with you. But leave Obama’s fashion sense out of this. And please go back to focusing on stories that matter like NFL Quarterback Brett Favre’s sexting controversy.

Editor’s Note (that’s me! I’m the editor too!): All these photos were found in the New York Post. Just in case you thought I had time to hunt down historical Presidential photography while taking care of four kids.

Contributing mama Erin K. Butler is about to go from a family of three to four. And she’s got all the guilt that goes along with it. Click here to read more. (And there’s a baby update at the end of the post!)

  • Michelle says:

living in the state and being married to a “local”, I tend to believe I am somewhat of an expert in this department..flip flops (aka slippahs to the locals) are practically the state footware…whats the big whoop NYP?

  • Abby says:

Perfect post. I love you and the NYP. I’m more concerned about Barry’s chicken legs. Crocs are horrific and GWB just reinforces that viewpoint.

  • Wendi says:

I think the next time he’s in Hawaii, Obama should wear white socks and loafers and a t-shirt that says, “Suck it, NYP” tucked into red shorts.

  • Bitsy says:

Love me some flip-flops! So glad I live in the south where I can wear them 10 mos out of the year. And the president is rocking them. I love Michelle’s scandalous bare shoulders, too! Poor George and Bill need some help.

  • Valerie says:

Great post as always! I’m beginning to wonder why anyone believes that the President is really any different than any other man in the personal sense. He looks quite normal, and attractive, in this picture. I’d be quite embarrassed if he were wearing a suit and tie while vacationing in Hawaii! Regardless of your politics, clothing should not make a difference. So unless he is running around getting indecent exposure charges, why would anyone care what he’s wearing? At least he is dressed. I take that back, I might have a problem if he took to the likes of Lady Gaga.

  • annie says:

I also saw a pic of a shirtless Obama and they were asking if that was ok. I say hell yeah!

Hey, next time keep the socks & crocs pic to yourself. Ewww!

  • lAunt Marcia (Guess Whose?) says:

Personally I’d rather see Obama in Speedos….or as they refer to them ‘banana slings’.

  • Leigh Ann says:

God forbid he actually be comfortable and look like a normal person. They would probably bitch if he was dressed more formally: “OMG Obama is wearing shoes and SOCKS on vacation in Hawaii!!! What a tightass!!!”

And GW totally wore flip flops. We practically live in them 300 days out of the year here in Austin. But maybe that was when he was a lowly governor.

  • Flucky Mom says:

Hysterical! You know, I don’t have an issue with the flip flops (I’m sure neither would Rachel Zoe). What’s wrong with the attire are Obama’s chicken legs. He should not be wearing shorts. Don’t tell my husband I said that, b/c he too has chicken legs.

  • layla solms says:

maybe this is a bait and switch.
distract the general public with the president’s fashion statement…. while something else is going on… if we could just figure out what that might be.

  • Mwa says:

Definitely better than trainers or crocs with socks. Definitely. Besides, anything Obama wears instantly becomes sexy to me. That man is sex on two legs…

  • Aimee says:

Seriously. Unless Mr President is wearing high heels–then it should make the paper while on his vacation–never the less the front page! Like the crocs on Bush was any better! In my mind crocs is right below high heels! 🙂
