I’ve got some big news. And let me stop you right there because I am not pregnant. I love all 5 of my gorgeous children but I’m not looking to add to the bunch. I mean, look at the ones I’ve got….

moving - all 5

moving - 4 in a line

moving- Harlowe kissing cash

moving - dylan and self portrait

moving - kelcey and cash on beach

Did you see what I did there? I held you hostage with the promise of big news and then made you look at photos of my children.

So here’s the deal. We are moving. To the Miami area. I have lived in New York a long time and it’s hard to imagine myself as anything but a girl who lives in NY but now I’m going to be a girl who lives in FL.

Why are we moving?

Mostly because we want to wait in long voting lines and be swing voters. And eat dinner much earlier. Plus, my husband got a new job opportunity down there. Wrangling alligators I think.

I’m very sad to leave our friends but very happy to kick winter to the curb. My oldest daughter, a 3rd grader, is devastated. She says she’s not going. She says she is duct taping herself to her best friend. She says she’ll miss us but we can visit her in New York.ย  I have run out of words to try to make her feel better so now I just nod my head and say, “Okay Dylan. We will miss you too. What pattern duct tape are you using?”

Because I was very pregnant when we needed to buy a house, Rick flew down to Florida and bought one. Except for photos, I’ve never seen it. This is a man that I would prefer not grocery shop alone and he has purchased us a house. I’m trying not to stress out about it. I mean, I’m sure I’ll love the Chia Pet carpeting and Western themed mosaics.

So we are leaving.

But not leaving you.

Because you’ll always find me and my family right here.

  • Wow! Congratulations, Kelcey! If Mama Rose were here, she’d tell you the history of all the serial killers in the Miami area, but since it’s me, I’ll just say… Congratulations, Kelcey!

  • OMH. I hope you have a moving company doing the whole thing for you. 5 kids and packing…. Nah!
Yay for the warmth though. We’ve just spent a couple of days in the Berg and returned home to the sea – the temp difference is ASTOUNDING!!! I love the warmth.

This is so exciting! Please tell me your husband got a house with an extra bedroom for beloved friends who visit!

And I’ll keep an eye on Dylan in NY.

  • Tasha says:

Congratulations for your move to Miami. Hopefully the house doesn’t have chia pet carpeting, lots of homes in FL have tile everywhere which can be hard on feet and little kids heads. When I first moved here 9 years ago, my feet would ache when I was barefoot around the house, wearing shoes helps. Helmets optional.

I’m in Central Florida. Just know that when the forecast calls for rain, they are usually wrong or if it does just wait 20 minutes until it clears up. Always prepare for rain even when the sky is clear.

Yikers! I knew your house here was for sale, did it sell? When are you moving? I’m sure it’s exciting and scary and I CAN NOT believe you let Rick buy a house without you? I would let Rob pick a rental without me, but buy… um, not sure I’m that chilled out. Good luck, I will miss seeing you and the family, thank goodness for mama bird diaries! KD

  • Megan says:

Beautiful family photos! Now what’s the big news? Oh I was distracted… Congrats on the new job and the new house. Can’t believe your moving to FL. Wishing you a few relaxing moments mixed in with the hectic stressful ones of moving during your last NY summer. In the end I think Dylan will choose family over her best friend.

  • Kelly says:

So exciting — we live about an hour and a half north of Miami – moved down here for a TV job too – been here 15 years now. We LOVE it – though get yourself some good hairspray for the humidity day! But there is nothing like raising your kids at the beach – we see dolphins jumping all the time – it’s a great place to live! Looking forward to reading about your adventures.

Wow!! Congratulations! We love living in Miami, and you will too! It is hard to leave friends, but it helps to have the date of your next get-together to look forward to! Check out Just Ask Boo for a free email newsletter you can subscribe to that allows you to post questions & people will send you helpful answers, recommendations, etc. It can be very helpful to find out about venues for kids, references for house repairs, etc. when you are learning about a new area, and also there are listings for household help, nannies, babysitters, etc. (just in case you might be interested in that sort of thing, haha!) Wishing you & your family all the best & wishing you an easy move! : )

  • Shannon says:

Big news! I, too, did not see our house until the day we moved in three years ago. It’s great but very hard to clean. I guess my husband wasn’t looking for those details when he saw it.
    Good luck with your move!!

  • Glamamom says:

Well, NY —> FL isn’t the oddest move. You’re just about 20 years early. Best wishes! You’d make a happy home anywhere. NY and its high-priced insanity will always be here.

  • Steph says:

Wow, that is big news! My family moved out of state when I was about Dylan’s age and yes I was sad to leave but at that age you make new friends so easily. Hope your move goes just as planned; but if not, at least you’ll have hilarious blog fodder. I love living without a real winter and could never live like that again.

  • Julie says:

So glad you’re not leaving us…I have two year old twins and have been following you since before they were born. I need your blog. If you can handle five, I can’t complain about two. I’m in WI…I could leave winter behind any time now too – jealous!

  • Angie says:

Awww ๐Ÿ™ Sad you are leaving but congratulations! I wish you all the best as you start this new chapter of your lives in Florida! When do you leave? If you need any help packing or anything let me know!

  • Congrats.. I’ve heard that Alligator Wrangling is actually a huge biz in Miami! Seriously, will miss your insights on the NY life, but I spent a lot of time in Miami and Fort Lauderdale with my fun (okay, crazy) relatives and think your family will really love it.

  • Liz says:

Oh wow, that is crazy!! We are currently living in the south and trying to decide between moving to NY or FL, as we love both places equally! (Though we’re leaning toward NY. So… you have a house for sale there now, huh? ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) I actually came across your blog a couple of years ago because I was trying to get a glimpse of what raising a family in NY would be like, and now I can continue to keep up with you to see the same about FL, lol! Congrats on your hubby’s new job, and I hope the move goes well and that you’ll love your new house!

  • MN Mama says:

Does Dylan know that FL residents get big discounts getting into Disney World? I know that it does not make the grief go away but it may be a nice thing to let her know. I am wishing you all the best in FL! I hope to see you when we go down to see Todd’s brother and family.

  • Nancy says:

What sweet pictures…sounds like a wonderful new adventure and you’ll all be just fine – even dylan! Nothing is forever and you can always move back:). Keep the faith and safe travels.

  • Debbie Bloom says:

Florida’s full of New Yorkers! You won’t even notice the difference.

    Hope you are doing well!
Debbie Bloom (Pi Phi sister at Newcomb!)

  • Mona (Moxie-Dude) says:

Dylan’s decision to stay in New York reminds me of my decision to run away when I was about 7. And your response reminds me of my mother’s. In fact, she helped. She packed me a lunch and said, “why don’t you take your brother?” – who was 4 at the time. So I did. We left. We ate. And then once we’d finished all the crackers and cheese our mother had packed for us, we went back home because it was almost time for my brother’s nap. All that to say that you’re doing the right thing by just simply sympathizing with Dylan. In the end, she’ll follow you to Florida.

  • Juley says:

You are going to love Florida! I lived there for 10 years and now I am in Alaska. As you can guess I am very jealous of your move. Good luck and enjoy no more snow!

  • Ann says:

Wow!! Best wishes on this new chapter. Amazing how you’ve created a life consisting of only new chapters.

Wish you were coming to BlogHer. I’m going to go ahead and assume you’re not. I’m presumptuous like that.

You have such a beautiful family!

  • Angi says:

Funny… We may be following you shortly and were talking about the house thing. I may need to pick your brain on what you found for schools!

  • NYCBaby1 says:

Ok, so this is going to sound crazy, but I knew–or thought–you were moving because I was looking at real estate online recently, and could’ve sworn I was looking at a listing for your house! (I won’t reveal the site or town or MLS here.) I guess I’ve paid as much attention to your decor as to your gorgeous kids! Good luck with the move– and whoever bought your place is super-lucky because it is gorgeous!

  • Mary Clare says:

Never a dull moment in your place! Can’t wait to hear about all the antics, I mean the calm, smooth transition, here. Best wishes for the move.

  • Marta says:

Congrats on the move! I’m sure it will be a great opportunity and who doesn’t love sunshine, early bird menus? Plus I’ve been watching Dexter every day for the last few weeks and Miami looks pretty nice. GOOD LUCK!
