(If you are a guy, you really don’t need to read this. I mean, you can. But don’t say you weren’t warned.)

I was going to get a tubal ligation (that’s fancy for getting your tubes tied) since I have to have a c-section. I was told it’s easy! It takes 3 minutes! As long as the doctor has already cut you open, why not?!

I was sort of convinced. But then I sort of wasn’t. And finally, I decided against it all together. I thought, “Hey, maybe we will love having 5 kids so much, that we will want a 6th!”

ARE YOU INSANE?! I NEVER THOUGHT THAT.

I chose not to do it because there was something bothering me about the procedure. So I started reading about the risks and I wasn’t happy. There are women who are suffering from something that is very real called Post-Tubal Ligation Syndrome.

Symptoms can include…

  • Menstrual irregularity
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Chills
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Decreased libido
  • Thinning hair and fingernails
  • Breast tenderness
  • Weight gain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Headaches

Ugh. I know there are many many women who get their tubes tied and live happy, healthy, care free lives. But I just can’t add the possibility of this syndrome to my plate. There can also be a lot of emotions that go along with having your tubes tied and frankly I don’t have the energy for that either. So what I’m saying is…

My darling husband is going to have to step up to the plate for a vasectomy. Feel free to cheer him on.

Okay, enough about tubal ligations! Have you ever wondered if all those cute moms in yoga pants and tennis skirts are really working out? Here’s the answer on Lifetime Moms.

i had a tubal ligation when i was 38 after i had a c-section. no side effects, no problems. it was a huge relief not to use birth control(me or him) for the next 16 years. I’m 58 now & feeling great.

My husband reports that a vasectomy is no big deal. At all. Basically, the guy gets a day off to watch sports on TV with a bag of frozen peas nearby. Snippetty snip.

My mother had a tubal ligation after my almost 18 year old sister was born. Nine years later, she got pregnant again. It’s a 1 in 1000 change, apparently, but it happens. I was a senior in high school when she was born and was MORTIFIED. She then told my father he was never touching her again unless he got snipped.

I was also a post-tubal baby — my mom got pregnant with me 3 years after her tubes were tied after my older sister was born.

After my twins came (making 4 kids in 5 years) I had my tubes tied at delivery, C-section. After about 8 months I began to exhibit all symptoms listed above. Ended up having ~almost~ full hysterectomy when twins were 2 after almost daily excruciating pain. I’ve told everyone I know, “I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone” and I’m dead honest! My OB never warned me of re side effects.

  • Princess Judy says:

I never knew there were side effects, but then again it is a surgical procedure so why wouldn’t there be the possibility of things going wrong? I never wanted kids and tried for years and years and years to get my tubes tied, but since I never had kids no one would agree to do it. They all seemed to think I’d change my mind even though I was adamant. Now that I’m over 45 I’m still considering it as I have an irrational fear that I’ll end up with one of those menopause babies. And now apparently the possibility of side effects. You don’t have to nurture side effects or send them to college though.

I thought having my tubes tied also after having my second child but while I was pregnant I talked with a lady I met in the pharmacy. Her mother had her tubes tied and had twins after that, she also had her tubes tied and ended up having triplets so I decided that wasn’t the best option for me. Who gets their tubes tied and has multiple kids?????

  • karen says:

My husband planned his “procedure” to happen over Master’s weekend – so he spent 48 hours watching 72 holes of golf and didn’t feel guilty about helping me with the 4 kids that we had, due to him NOT getting a vasectomy earlier! At least Phil won that year.

  • Rhonda says:

My mother had a tubal ligation, and she ended up getting pregnant in the tube. I was about 11 years old, and my dad was unstable (he spent many nights in a bar rather than with his family). My mom didn’t come home from work that night, and being the oldest, I was in charge of my siblings. I remember being worried because of the lack of adult supervision (as if that mattered considering my father). Come to find out, her tube ruptured at work because the baby had grown, she passed out, and they took her to hospital. I remember my dad taking us to the hospital, and the scene of the pain she was in as she laid in that hospital bed is burned into my mind even 25 years later.

Now, granted, you could possibly still slip one past the goalie with the vasectomy, but I figure you’ve had 5 children. It’s his turn to sacrifice his body!

  • My advice is never doing anything permanent. Also, 9 months pregnant is never an optimal time to make rational decisions! I can’t even pick out a couch at that point, let alone decide whether I will have any more children.

I had my tubes tied in ’01 after my youngest was born. He was my third kid in 4 years and my body had had enough, husband would NOT get snipped and we weren’t in a good place in our marriage at that time. I LOVED it! NO side affects…then, his 11th birthday rolled around, my over active imagination went into OVER drive and I dreamed (for MONTHS) that I’d gotten pregnant again! GASP! THE HORROR! So, I had an interuterine ablasion (that’s probably NOT how you spell it, too lazy for Google right now) and I’ve had NO periods for almost a year! But everyone is different and I applaud you!

An amazing testimony on on how i conceive, also cure from fibroid, i wonder why people still don’t believe that roots and herbs are very essential and fruitful in different aspect, especially when you can’t conceive and bear children. I am a living witness because I tried all I could to be pregnant but all to no avail, on this faithful day, i decided to check the net for updates on healthy living and i came across testimonies of lot of women who Ahiga has helped with his native herbs to conceive. i decided to put a try because this has been my greatest problem in life so I emailed Ahiga, and he told me what to do which i did, after which he sent me some roots and herbs syrup and gave me step by step guild lines on how and when to have sex with my man. I missed my menstrual flow within a short period of taking it, and the doctor confirmed that I am pregnant. I am very glad to tell the world that I just put to bed a bouncing baby boy last week. Contact Ahiga for your own testimony on: (ahigahealing@ yahoo. com).
