the olympics… what are you wearing?
So if you saw Michael Phelps on the cover of Sports Illustrated…
…did it remind you of former Olympian Mark Spitz (as intended)?
Or instead, did it remind you of actor Jim Carrey, in Jenny McCarthy’s bikini?
Because at first glance, I thought Michael Phelps was wearing a women’s bathing suit. But maybe I’m just weird. That’s definitely a possibility.
Meanwhile, how do people figure out that they are good at sports like pole vaulting and discus throwing? I mean, it’s not like their mom thought, “Hey, Harry could use an activity on Tuesday afternoons. Maybe I’ll sign him up for javelin throwing at the Y.” Or is that how it indeed works?
And finally (I do realize this is enormously shallow with the depth of the athletic talent and commitment on display at the Olympics) couldn’t they have designed cuter outfits for the women’s gymnastics team?
I guess if you win a gold medal, who gives a crap what you’re wearing? My apologies for my superficial comments, I just caught up on my “Project Runway” episodes and fashion design is obsessively on my brain.
By the way, when are they going to kick off… I think I have impeccable taste but I really don’t… Daniel? I just can not watch his sad, brown, weepy eyes as he gets completely trashed by the judges again. And Keith with the crazy thick bandanna around his head? I mean, why? Why is he wearing that?!
Ah… after three weeks in Europe, U.S. pop culture never felt so good.

After all of the fabulous photos taken of Michael Phelps, I think the \\\”updated Spitz\\\” idea was a bit uninspired. And, yes, random.

I liked the girl’s red outfits. The blue ones weren’t as nice, but the red looked great.
I thought the same thing when I scrolled down the page there, that MP was wearing a woman’s suit…ugh! But he looks so much better there then he did in the Google page cartoon header that was up a few days back. He looked like a swimming sperm.

I skipped the Olympics for Project Runway last night, of course! RuPaul looked like he was on the verge of tears over that pink jumpsuit.

What I don’t understand is why the girl gymnasts have to stick about 25 hair clips in their hair. You’d think they’d maybe start growing it out in advance?

I wonder when swimmers (the men) started shaving their underarms? Post-Spitz, clearly. Was it slowing them down, I wonder?
It’s probably responsible for at least a couple of the world records Phelps has broken this Olympics.
A Gillette endorsement can’t be far behind.

I’m SO glad you said that about the Sports Illustrated cover – I thought it was my own warped mind – thinking that he looked like a swimmer in drag. It apears as if someone in the photo dept. pulled one over on the magazine, and swapped out a goofy photo in the 11th hour. (Do you think that they will want to take his medals away, given the inappropriate photo?) And it’s funny about the olympic outfits- I am not a great athlete at ALL, but I love to wear cute yoga outfits on the stairmaster – makes me feel better than I am. I guess the reverse is true for professional athletes!

Hahaha! My browser was showing just the top of the photo, and I thought for sure someone had Photoshopped Phelps wearing an evening gown!
BTW, where are those swimmers’ hips? Can they possibly exist? Is not having hips the way to repeat Olympic gold?

Yes he does! Yes yes! He’s wearing a halter top. It looks weird the photo. He needed a few medals less. Congratulations on the award by the way. You deserve it and more. Also, ditto on the girls gymnastics team leotard and one the sport choosing thing. How does a parent decide their child has an aptitude for some obscure sport they had perhaps never even heard of? Personally, I think my son might have an aptitude for live pigeon shooting. I really think he could be a medal contender in that one.

Hilarious insight! Apparently from all the commenters you and I weren’t the only ones who were more reminded of Jim Carey than of Mark Spitz. Maybe it’s just how most of us online folk look at a photo like that- with the scroll button.

Michael has a neck like a giraffe; and a very strange body; obviously suited for winning gold in swimming competition. But I think he might find out later he’s got a growth on his pituitary gland causing long chin, big nose/hands/feet…

I so could not get over that cover of Michael Phelps looking so girly! It smacks to me of Japanese halter top meets high-waisted non-jeans! No one else in the house agreed with me, so I gave up. Thanks for being with me!
