Anthony Weiner just announced that he’s taking a leave of absence from Congress to get professional help. Obviously, he’s been listening to the advice of The Mouthy Housewives.

I know some people have tired of all the Weiner coverage but I say, keep it coming. I just can not believe the crazy texts that he sent and received from all those women. That guy was really getting his money’s worth from his unlimited texting plan.

This story just makes the rest of us just look so good. I mean, I don’t feel like such a moron when I drive all the way to the pool club and then get a call from my dad, “Did you mean to leave your pool bag in the middle of the driveway?”

I still feel great about myself because even though I just drove all the way to the pool without towels, water, snacks, hats and sunscreen at least I’m not sending sleazy texts to random guys I’ve picked up on Facebook and Twitter. Hurray for me!

Wiener is obviously totally humiliated and there is no way he can focus on doing his Congressional work, mostly because he’s too busy groveling to his pregnant wife. Still, I don’t think he should step down.

If he resigns now, he’ll just be a disgraced politician with a future as a TV pundit on some low rated cable show. He should stick it out and hope his constituents re-elect him.

President Clinton had a sexual affair with an intern involving a cigar for gosh sakes, lied about it, ultimately refused to resign and today he’s a respected former President who has to put up with the occasional Monica Lewinsky joke. Okay, a lot of Lewinsky jokes but still.

I don’t really personally care what happens to Weiner. He’s not my Congressman and he’s not my husband (I really dodged a bullet there). But it would be a mistake for him to give up now on his political career.

Clinton got through the firestorm and I bet Weiner will too.

But his name is Weiner. He already had like, a hundred strikes against him to begin with. That said, if he made it through junior high with the last name of Weiner, he should be able to make it through this.

  • Stasha says:

We are stay at home moms and barely find time to tweet. Are these chaps just not busy enough? Maybe he should go fetch your towels or walk my dog.

  • Diane says:

It just saddens me that these elected and professed elites think they are our rulers, not representatives, think they can go any way their junk rolls. What happened to integrity in this world? We can point to Weiner as a grave cautionary tale and say poor fool. But what has gotten into our culture to first do this behavior and then to excuse it. Mystefying.

  • Renee says:

It won’t surprise me if he stays in office or, even, gets reelected. This is America, after all. Americans vote like Dory the fish from Finding Nemo; short term memory damage. If he’d fessed up at the beginning instead of lying, Americans might have embraced him (not physically…you know what I mean). But, what concerns me is an elected official showing this kind of lapse (or lack) of judgement. Texting teen girls…come on! How can these guys think they aren’t going to get caught? They leave such obvious trails and someone is always following it. Maybe Nina is on to something. There’s no way this guy made it through middle school unscathed with that name. I’ve taught middle school. It could not have been good for Little Tony. With the right lawyer & therapist, he could spin this as post traumatic middle school disorder.

  • Marinka says:

    Weiner is no Clinton.

I’m so curious about where he’s seeking this treatment. I hope it’s not at the Verizon store, because when my BlackBerry was broken they weren’t very helpful.

  • Jennifer says:

I don’t think he should step down, either. Sure, this is really, really embarrassing, but it has nothing to do with his job. Sorry, it just doesn’t. George Bush got re-elected despite starting two senseless wars that have killed uncountable numbers of people. Now that’s horrifying. Forgive me, but people need to stop losing their damn minds over anything that has to do with sex and focus instead on issues that really affect our well-being and our future. No one wants to think about it (certainly not me) but he’s probably not in the minority among his colleagues. He just happened to get caught.

    • Nancy Walton says:

Well stated, Jennifer and I couldn’t agree with you more. He wasn’t going out with prostitutes like David Vitter, R-Louisiana (who got elected by touting his strong “family values” and is STILL in office, still raising funds). He wasn’t going out with little boys like Mark Foley, R-Florida. He wasn’t going into men’s rooms with wide stances like Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and there are so many other more egregious examples of real sex scandals, many of which include a big fat dose of hypocrisy, that are ten times worse than Anthony Weiner’s propensity for wanting to share photos of his peepee. He was one of the only voices in Congress willing to speak out strongly in support of progressive causes that affect the lives of so many: the middle class, women, children, the poor, elderly, the list is endless. The only scandal is that some of his fellow Democrats are willing to throw him under the bus when they should be circling the wagons and giving him the kind of support that much less-deserving Republicans who have done so much worse get from their party. And about that 17-year old girl who supposedly received tweets from Weiner? Authorities checked it out and the girl’s family issued the following statement through their lawyer: “The tweets in question between the student in question and the Congressman in question were not salacious nor in any manner inappropriate. No photographs were ever sent to her or from her.” Anthony Weiner’s constituents elected him and they want him to stay in office. That’s the bottom line.

One point you state about the public “people need to stop losing their damn minds over anything that has to do with sex and focus… on issues” I think it’s the opposite – leaders, men & women with amazing minds and talents need to stop losing THEIR damn minds with sex and damaging their lives with disgusting behavior and just do the job they were hired (elected by us) to do.

      • Jennifer says:

@Megan – It just seems like the public’s contempt for anything related to sex is far out-sized compared to our outcry over other poor decisions. And I would rather save my harshest judgment for issues that really matter to the well-being of the most people.

      • Beth says:

When politicians partake in such seedy activity…it distracts from what the real issues are. I agree with Megan. Keep it in your pants and DO YOUR DAMN JOB! What ever happened to self restraint and not giving into every lust-filled thought that enters the mind? What has this world come to…seriously? I really wonder about their intelligence. Just the thought of it getting out would scare me into behaving! But I guess I have morals…something lots of politicians are severly lacking.

And I didn’t think I felt this strongly about it. I don’t even think it’s completly about Weiner at this point. I could care less about him…but I do feel sorry for his PREGNANT wife. I’m really just sick of hearing about ALL OF THEM and their sex scandals!

  • Jordana says:

I don’t know why but I disagree with you – I don’t think he’ll ever be free of this scandal. I think he’ll be a laughing stock forever. Maybe it’s the last name, maybe it’s the fact that these lewd sexts are printed for all to see and just so silly. I don’t know – I just think the Weiner is done. I just love it when we talk politics!! Hee hee.

  • He’s an idiot, that’s true and he’s also one of the few Dems who dares call out the Repubs on their idiocy, in congress. The right-wing idiocy stands to screw a lot of folks–esp women & children (hello planned parenthood cuts anyone?) Wieners wienie-ness screws his wife, his marriage, and the doodus ladies on the recieving end of his junk mail ( so to speak). Idiot yes, illegal, no. Let his constituents vote on whether they want his particular brand of idiocy to represent them.

  • Beth says:

I think he’s just gross. Period. As is anyone who thinks of themselves before their pregnant wives. Just gross.

  • Kblooey says:

if you have to call Bill Clinton to apologize for your moral failings, you’re really in bad shape. Little Anthony’s left the building.

  • Jen says:

Alec Baldwin for M,ayor of NYC! I know, nothing to do with the Weiner, but it made me smile when I heard that rumor.

If only Weiner didn’t lie, maybe people wouldn’t care so much (other than his poor wife)….

  • Aunt Marcia (Guess Who?) says:

How come the women politicians aren’t ever caught flashing their beavers at some teenage boy? I guess it only happens if you’re a school teacher. Men will be ‘men’, which means they spend 90% of their time thinking about sex and the only solution to this if you’re tired of all the ‘sex scandals’ is VOTE FOR WOMEN ONLY.

  • Amy says:

    I don’t know… I think he should go, because

    1) what Clinton did was not as ENTIRELY creepy and weird in quite so public a way. We never had to see pictures of his bony, waxed chest, and junk in underpants. Not sure Weiner’s going to live this one down, I can’t look at him without being skeeved.

    2) He must not have ever. done. ANY. work. because was this not apparently a full-time job for him? How do any of these cats get anything done?

So I think he should step down like anyone working at 1-800-MATTRESS would step down once it became clear they were doing everything but their job while at work. But i don’t really care, I’m just so disgusted with this whole class of a-hole politicians at this point.

  • Megan says:

The moment a leader has such severe lapse in judgement and chooses cheap thrills over appropriate behavior, they have lost all respect from me and do not deserve my vote, my tax dollars to pay their salary and retirement nor my time worrying about their penis and horrifically skeletal frame.

  • Valerie says:

It really doesn’t matter what he does, he will always be a disgrace, because it is my opinion that this is nothing like what Clinton did. Lewinsky was a consenting adult making her own choices. We can argue “position of authority” all day long. But that’s the bottom line.

I agree that we shouldn’t always get our panties in a bunch over these sex scandals. But, it isn’t the particular of the scandal but how it makes our nation look, and how much is it taking from the job they are elected to do. Seriously, is Weiner getting much work done? I doubt it.

While I never would have voted for him in the first place (I’m pretty conservative after all) even if I had I’d be looking for a suitable replacement. Not that I’d find one. All politicians are crooked.
