If you want to sit down and enjoy a leisurely meal of delicious Shrimp Etouffee – then don’t have four kids. My sister and brother-in-law were sweet enough to make dinner for us. So last night I sat down to eat some of the leftovers and within 3 minutes, all four kids were crying.
It kind of sounded like a “Glee” performance but less harmony and choreography.
Summer was crying because she didn’t want to go to bed “alone” despite the fact that she shares a room with Dylan. Dylan was crying because Summer was crying. And the twins were crying because they were hungry and wanted milk. Or Shrimp Etouffee. They didn’t specify.
But frankly, what newborn doesn’t enjoy a nice creole dish.
Not only did my sister help cook for us, but she did just about everything else too.
I told her to just hold those babies for one minute while I ran upstairs to get new Diaper Dekor bags and then I promptly got on a Greyhound bus, hightailed it to the Foxwoods Casino and played craps for the rest of the day while drinking free gin and tonics.
Well, I wanted to.
I wish I could think of new fresh, clever, hilarious ways to tell you how exhausted I am. This morning, I did start desperately googling “overnight doulas,” “night baby nurses” and “please save from the deep, dark pit of fatigue.” I’m still not convinced that overnight help is worth the money since I’m breastfeeding and no one can do the feedings for me. But we’ll see how desperate I get.
Meanwhile, to help me get through the days and nights, I’m focusing on little moments of joy…
Like when I dropped off both girls at camp today and there were no tears.
That my twins are so soft and buttery scrumptious.
That Mel Gibson is not my baby daddy.
