getting from here to there
So a US Air jet crashed into the Hudson River recently, not all that far from our apartment, and that very evening my husband says to me,
“Oh that reminds me. We need to book our flights to Florida.”
“Really?! Is that what you thought? Because when I saw that plane on TV, sitting in the middle of the Hudson River, I thought how about if we NEVER fly again.”
“But doesn’t it make you realize how much talent and training these pilots have?” he responds.
“No, it makes me realize that geese can actually fly into BOTH engines causing a plane to crash. And on my long list of concerns when I fly – geese wasn’t even on the list. But now there it is. Geese now falls after “terrorism” and before “landing gear getting stuck.”
“But did you see how perfectly he landed that plane?”
“Yes. Into the icy, frigid water,” I point out.
“But everyone survived!”
“Sure. And that’s amazing. But all in all, still a pretty bad day for those folks, don’t you agree? I mean, any day where your plane crashes is kind of crappy. You really can’t argue with that.”
“It’s really warm in Florida,”
“Fine. Book the tickets. Make sure it’s a plane with a lot of engines.”

My #3 gets hand-me down clothes, toys, books, eveything and dragged to all her sibs’ events. She would freak out to go to Elmo alone with Mommy!
That flight to FL is nothing a little Xanax can’t get you through!

I’m glad I’m not alone in my fear of flying. Too bad I’m flying cross-country to California next week! Unfortunately for me, I’m 4 months pregnant, so I’m sure the flight attendants and passengers will frown upon me if I threw back a couple of mini-bottles. Have fun in Florida!

holy ELMO (that is my way of saying count me in for the contest) all i could think of seeing the plane in the hudson was what the hell would i do if i was on that plane with my girls. how would i save them….
[Reply]
You know who else is a little afraid of flying – ELMO! (No, I still never got those tix, so I could use that discount code as well!)

From now on I am only flying in the summers, wearing a bathing suit.

It does get harder and harder to get on a plane. Can’t live in fear but it is hard. Your hubby has a great attitude though…I cringe and hold the seat arms tight most of the way…valium anyone?

Great post! Laughing outloud here as my husband mutters ‘sshhh!’ in his sleep next ot me. They should do an “Elmo” episode all about how to safely and calmly evacuate a plane after a crash. “Bert” and “Ernie” can star in the show!

i really like you.
my thoughts go to your thinking (hi freezing water UP TO THEIR CHESTS!!), my husband is like yours, which is why i will gulp my fears and get on a plane in a few weeks. xo

Hilarious conversation.
Amazing piloting skills.
Geese now terrify me.

My grandmother used to always LOVE to fly the day after a plane crash. She figured the odds were really good.

My husband and I are cracking up reading this b/c I’m terrified to fly, yes even after all those years of travel I am almost paralyzed with fear on an airplane. Could you really see it from your apartment?
[Reply]
It is hard to be a fan of flying these days. I do give Rick points for trying (and he is right, it is warm in Florida). Good luck with the flights and great post. xoxo

I was wondering when you were going to address this!!! I have been waiting!! The pilot is a neighbor…well in the 50 miles or so neighborhood!! Sully is Da man!! GO SULLY!! We celebrated him locally yesterday. A true hero he is. I hope he is the pilot on ever flight I ever take again!

Liquor sales on flights ought to go up after that crash. (Did I say crash? I meant water landing…)
Make mine a double.

apparently this geese problem was an issue a long time ago. Why is it that we can send a man to the moon but get rid of the fucking of the geese.

So I thought Julia might have grown out of Elmo by now, but I think she would like to go – for free that is. Because Mommy just got the credit card bills from Christmas – Holy Xmas!

laughing out loud… I agree with you.
I mean, all of the new costs and security restrictions sort of put a damper on the whole experience anyhow… but the smaller seat spaces, lack of honey roasted peanuts and, as you’ve mentioned, Canadian feathered terrorists- I’m really liking the road trip idea.

I can’t even express to you how much booze it took me to get on a plane to New York a few months ago. And that was before the image of the plane in the middle of the Hudson was forever sealed in my mind.
Also, do we really need geese? I think only small, non-engine-destroying birds should be allowed to live.
[Reply]
Yup. Definitely one of those news items that made me add to my worry list. Makes me glad that we can’t afford to fly the whole family somewhere.
Do you think they’ll start checking carry-ons for our fine feathered friends?
[Reply]
Yeah, you gotta hope your pilot is in his league. Blind faith – just close your eyes, take a sip, and picture the palm trees, sweetie. Palm trees! You can do it!
[Reply]
I still think the scariest thing on a plane is an 2 year-old with the stomach flu.
[Reply]
My sister’s husband is starting to fly more for work, and hates flying, so that crash really freaked them out!
[Reply]
I agree – it is scary to fly but just think it is warm in Florida – so have fun and try not to think of the geese when you are in the air – as hard as it may seem! Oh btw – did I mention Noah still absolutely loves Elmo.
[Reply]
Yeah. Flying is RIGHT UP THERE with bungee jumping and hand feeding crocodiles for me lately.
[Reply]
What are my chances of winning (by default) again? I think Elmo is a great antidote to the winter blues. Actually Florida is much better!
[Reply]
They still say flying is safer than driving!!!
Elmo, Ernie, Bert – love them all – would love to go! Thanks!
[Reply]
Okay – let me start by saying I don’t need the tickets for Elmo because I would need to FLY to get there for the show! I do think it was a wonderful ending to a really scary situation and it is truly a miracle. Don’t you always feel a bit of comfort when you are all on the plane together? I find it is worse when I am leaving by myself or we are splitting up the family. I do not need to remind you of how gorgeous the beach is!!
[Reply]
tee hee. I’m scared of flying too.
Good thing if I win (wink* wink*), I just have to ride the subway to see Elmo!
[Reply]
I never want to get on a plane again. Please enter us in the Sesame giveaway. Harry would freak over Elmo, Bert, Ernie and the whole crew.
[Reply]
If I did not get on a plane in the winter, I would probably go a little nutty here in MN. Going to FL or somewhere warm is totally worth the anxiety in my mind. If you need some help with some relaxation techniques, I would be happy to help you. Hang in there friend! I am sure it was scary for you.
[Reply]
Todd hit a small flock of geese on landing and he was just fine. The 6 month old airplane had hundreds of thousands in damage, but who really cares about that. I’d love the Elmo tixs too!
[Reply]
Haha! I am with you. I really don’t like flying. The sucky part is that I really love to travel. Figures.
Are you really coming to Florida? What part?
[Reply]
See now, my first thought was “I wonder if they get the fly free forever package that the folks on LOST got.”
I think I need to sort out TV from reality;)
[Reply]
All I could think about was how icy cold that water was for them, a miracle they all lived, and I should stop complaining our water doesn’t get hot enough in our shower! Would be there for Elmo in a heartbeat as Kyleigh ADORES them as her best friends!
[Reply]
I almost thought I was dreaming when I saw that! Kuddos to the pilots! I feel the same as your hubby. They are well trained wow!
AND who’s going to turn down warm weather at this point?! I mean, I’m wouldn’t if anyone was offering to take me anywhere warm (which they aren’t but I’m trying hard NOT to be bitter about it). Have fun btw lol!
[Reply]
I echo your geese issue. I am terrified to fly and I didn’t even know to be afraid of them. First they crap all over my neighborhood playground, now this!!!
[Reply]
Yeah, I don’t want to go anywhere either.
[Reply]
LMAO! I have to get on a plane to go to the Blissdom conference next weekend. You better BELIEVE I’ll be bringing the Ativan, and it won’t be “just in case” either – I’ll be sure to take the maximum allowed dosage before stepping FOOT in the security line.
