Pre-Recession Weekend Plans: Rick and I hire a babysitter and go out for dinner and drinks with friends.

Recession Weekend Plans: Rick and I sit down on our couch to survey the options on our DVR.

“We have “30 Rock” and “Grey’s Anatomy,”” he says.

“Your choice. I don’t care,” I reply.

“No, your pick. It’s Friday night. It’s Ladies’ Night.”

Ladies’ Night?

Is this what passes for Ladies’ Night nowadays? Because I distinctly remember a time when it meant endless free drinks for me and all my friends at our local college bar, while we scouted for hot frat boys to kiss.

That’s what being a lady was all about in 1990.

And now a few years later several years later nearly two decades later, it comes down a glass of white wine and a choice between “30 Rock” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

I pick “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Which has gotten so gross. And so serious. And so depressing.

Didn’t that show used to funny and carefree and all about the hook-ups?

You know, more like Ladies’ Night?

Obviously, we should have just watched “Friday Night Lights” with the commercials. It’s seriously the best show on television. And I know what you’re thinking. Um, hold on there cowgirl, don’t you always tout, “Gossip Girl” as the most amazing show ever?

Well, yes but….. “Friday Night Lights” is like an incredible dinner at a Mario Batali restaurant and “Gossip Girl” is the Butterfinger you scarf down on the cab ride home. Both completely awesome but totally different.

So go watch it. Afterwards, if you don’t end up really wanting to be Tami Taylor (Coach Taylor’s wife) like me and faithful mama bird reader E, I swear I’ll buy you a Butterfinger.

Oh by the way, that Butterfinger promise is a total scam.

mama bird notes:

I keep hearing the same thing about Friday Night Lights. Guess I should catch up on the seasons I missed already if I’m going to watch it?

P.S. At least no one has to be the designated driver for Ladies Night these days. Which really isn’t that much of a benefit, but it’s all I’ve got.

I don’t watch Friday Night Lights or Gossip Girl. My viewing time is completely consumed by my strict diet of Lost, Heroes, 24 and Supernatural. And yes, I know, I’m a loser.

Back when I was out enjoying those free flowing Ladies Night drinks, my girlfriends and I had a little regiment of doing a shot of peppermint schnapps every 2nd or 3rd cocktail. Why, you might ask? To keep our breath fresh, of course. Duh!

That’s what being a “lady” was about in 1986.

No one here can top the fact that I went to RK Bridals to go bridesmaids dress shopping.  I’m 36…and yet again…a bridesmaid…No one here has that particular joy lol!  I’ll take 7 nights of DVR if I never have to be a bridesmaid again!  Help!

our saturday night sounds like your friday night – ours included margaritas and nachos (all home-made of course) and ‘what happens in vegas’. we really know how to live, snort!

I am so glad I stopped watching Grey’s this season.  I could not take it.  On the other hand, I am watching the last episodes of ER which I totally swore off.  I am loving them.  I hope it all ends happy!  I think I am living in a dreamland.  What about bucket night at the Boot?  Yikes!

  • Ilene says:

Sounds like a perfect Friday night to me!! I agree Friday Night Lights is one of the best shows on TV. The dialogue is Great.

  • Chris says:

I hate to confess this to you, but I’ve never seen Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, OR Friday Night Lights.

I also LOVE your “Recession Weekend Plans”.  A glass of wine at home, watching t.v. after kids have been “put away” – my idea of the perfect “Ladies Night”. 🙂

  • Kara says:

Our Friday night was virtually the same – right down to the show choices.  But, we went with 30 Rock because Grey’s is so depressing these days, and I went with a martini because my kids had driven me insane all day.  Wine was not going to cut it 🙂

  • Aunt Marcia (Guess Whose?) says:

If you want to feel better about the recession/depression….watch American Greed and see all the scam artists out there and watch and listen to their victims who have been ‘wiped’ out financially.  At least I’m losing my money the old fashioned way – by the government taxes/inflation and stock market failures.   Us ‘old folks’ are just ‘coasting till the end’ and we remember the good times.  I feel sorry for you ‘young ones’….and if you can’t ‘beat them, join them’….Find yourselves a scam to perpetrate on the powers that got us into this mess in the first place.

  • I totally get the inside date nights.  We just watch movies rather than taped shows. (It is hard rationalizing a $100 movie date – babysitter, movie tix & perhaps some refreshments –  these days.

(P.S. I’m happy that I won the music.  Thanks!)

  • LOL! My “Ladies Nights” are along the same line as yours now. Except they are on Monday when I am glued to the TV to see what tortorous plot 24’s Jack Bauer has to offer up.

Augh, where did the drinking, bar hopping, and goggling over guys go? LOL

  • I forced the hubby to watch Twilight this weekend. At least he got some vodka out of the deal and I managed to talk him into getting me a bottle of my fav chardonnay.

And ladies night?  Gah!  I’m so old I don’t even remember what that’s like!

  • Lanie says:

I am not sure which I would watch first,  Friday Night Lights or Gossip Girl (sometimes it is ok to eat dessert first).  However, I would definitely meet you at Rendon for Ladies night before watching either (but I might check TiVO to doublecheck that it is recording the right channels. . .).  🙂

    Great post!!

30 rock started playing here. i remember tina fey from the 1990s when she did stand-up. i need to watch it from the start tho! never have been a greys girl – my daughter is tho!

  • E says:

Thanks for the shout out!  You and I ARE TAMI!!!!!  (Aren’t we?  Or maybe we are just her pals.)  All women over 30 should Netflix FNL from the beginning and indulge in every second of Tami and the bevy of hot yet accessible men on the show.  It is my crack.  And my husband’s.  At least we are cracked out together.

  • Amy says:

Okay, so I love Grey’s, don’t watch Friday Night Lights, but what jumped out at me? Um…the fact that you pointed out that 1990 was nearly two decades ago.  Haven’t thought about it in that light before–now I really want to cry.
