When I was a kid, I would visit my dad and we would pretty much do one of three things:
Go to a movie. We took turns picking the movie. So one day it would be “Valley Girl” and the next day it would be “Breaker Morant.”ย Yes, I exposed my father to Nicolas Cage’s first break-out role and to return the favor, he took me (a 10 year-old) to a movie about the murder trial of three Australian Army officers serving in South Africa during the Second Boer War (1899-1902, as if you didn’t already know).
I don’t know why I kept kicking the seat in front of me to express my extreme boredom.
Play miniature golf. I was very good at miniature golf and if my dad had only focused and honed this untapped talent, I would obviously be an unparalleled powerhouse on the mini golf circuit now.
Go bowling. Apparently during the 1970s and early 80s, bowling was a sport meant to crush children’s self esteem because I don’t remember there being any kind of gutter guards. So it was pretty much just me throwing the ball down the gutter frame after frame. And then crying. Because I sucked.
So you can imagine my desperate state, when on the last day of Dylan and Summer’s winter break, I cheerfully proclaimed, “Let’s go bowling!” Frankly, I was completely drained of all other ideas of how to keep two little kids busy in 20 degree weather. After two weeks of vacation, I had nothing left. My creative vault was empty.
So we went bowling…
And with the invention of those fabulous gutter guards, the girls LOVED it.
And I, of course, still suck.
These are our final scores:
Dylan: 93
Summer: 90
Rick: 127
Me: 61
Here’s my bowling technique in case you’re coveting my score…
And here’s Rick’s technique if you actually like to bowl over 100…
Next time, I’m seriously considering using the gutter guards.
Are those high heeled bowling shoes? I totally use the gutter guards, it’s not like we can move them up and down for the kids – official bowling staff only ๐ My score still sucks. For the littlest kids they even have ramps – so just put the ball on top of the ramp, add gutter guards, and sit back and enjoy that drink.
i’m TERRIBLE at bowling…but it’s still a lot of fun. xo
I’ll be honest with you. I’m not particularly coveting your score.
I completely suck at bowling, but I still love going. I’m kinda stupid that way.
At least your butt looks good while you are bowling. Definitely the most important thing.
I am SO like you. I’m terrible at bowling and always get the lowest score. But with my kid’s bumpers, 300 baby!
Bowling is FUN!!! Of course, we’ve taken our children a total of ONCE! Your score is SO much better than mine, I think I’m a tiny bit jealous!!! ;c)~
In the interest of family I always use the guards. And the kids always get higher scores anyway.
bowling with small fry is kind of a trip.
At least you got a pretty ball
I’m pretty sure that distracting neon lighting would make my score plummet, too. Seriously, blame the lights.
I want to find a comfortable pair of bowling shoes for every day. They ROCK!!!! In case you doubt my trend-setting ability, let it be known that a million years ago I saw the first ever Hummer on the road and told my teenaged son, “That is the coolest thing! I WANT ONE”. He said I was NUTS. “Who’s nuts NOW ????”
But you look so cute in those shoes! It’s all about the shoes….;)
You may have bowled a 61, but your butt looks good in those jeans. I mean, what’s more important, reallly?
We almost went bowling this break as well. We don’t have a “Wi”, but I’m quite sure that today’s kid can learn how to bowl in the comfort of their own home and in their slippers – thanks to the “wi” generation. Anyway, I tell my kids that the lower score wins, like golf – that way, I always win.
Yeah, are you wearing WEDGES?
wedges? your own shoes? tell us, please!
and how did you get the shot of hubby without getting hit with the ball?
I hate bowling because you have to wear someone else’s shoes, and stick your fingers in holes other people’s fingers have been in. It’s a dirtphobe’s worst nightmare. And yet, I go there still.
Todd and I were crazy enough to go on a bowling date recently and had so much fun without the kids!
No, I’m not wearing wedge bowling shoes (although it totally looks like it in the picture!). Do they even make wedge bowling shoes? That could be the new “it” item to own and wear in 2010.
We bowl all the time…. in our family room with our wii. The kids love it and we stay warm and do not have to wear the shoes. I am impressed you bowled! You are making great memories with the girls and Rick!
The first time we went bowling, the bumpers were up for all of us…loved it. The second time, they programmed them to come up for only the kids, I was bitterly disappointed but we still had a lot of fun.
we went bowling too over christmas break and the boys did better than dan and he used the bumpers too!!! ๐
When I go bowling with the kids (a few times a year), I ALWAYS play on the same lane they are playing. That way, I get the benefit of the gutter guards but it really just looks like we’re simply being a considerate family who doubles up on a lane when playing with awkward children. Bonus all around! Trust me, your score will improve dramatically.
Wait…you keep score when you bowl? Who knew;P
