Skimming through old journals is basically a requirement of packing 101. I noticed all my journals pretty much go like this…

Jan 14th, 1996 Met this cute, funny guy Dave at a dinner party but he was wearing a weird leather vest and he’s kind of short. I hope he calls me.

Jan 18th, 1996 Why hasn’t Dave called?! I am SO bummed. I thought he really liked me.

Jan 19th, 1996 He called! We’re going roller blading and seeing a movie this weekend. I can’t wait. I have a really good feeling about Dave. I told him not to wear the vest.

March 14th, 1996 I’ve been seeing Dave for awhile now but I don’t know, he kind of annoys me sometimes.

March 23rd, 1996 Dave is history. He has this high pitched laugh and always use the faux word, “anywho.” It’s maddening.

April 2, 1996 Met this totally cute boy in my building named Scott. I really hope he calls…

So as you can see, I have an extensive written history of my 20’s except that it gives no insight whatsoever into my hopes and dreams and thoughts on the world. All you can really glean is that leather vests and the word “anywho” totally rubbed me the wrong way.

Meanwhile, I’ve been driving a lot around the city (I think it’s my subconscious way of preparing for the suburbs). So I’ve been listening to a great deal of pop radio. I’m totally digging Kelly Clarkson’s song “My Life Would Suck Without You.”

And I can’t help but bop along with 3OH!3’s “Don’t Trust Me.” The song is so catchy but the lyrics are so ridiculously offensive…

“Shoosh girl, shut your lips,
do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips.”

I mean, seriously.

Poor Helen Keller. That brilliant woman accomplished so much and she’s still being terrorized by musicians in the 21st century.

By the way, I now know that the band 3OH!3 is pronounced “three oh three” and is named after the Boulder/Denver area code.

I am going to blow away those Westchester moms with my musical coolness.

Anywho, I have to run and pack.

That word still totally bugs.

mama bird notes:

3179082971_5e4aaf5872_m12Win free ice cream!! As you know, Iโ€™m running a super delish giveaway in the month of June from the fabulous Blue Bunnyยฎ ice cream!

Each week, one mama bird reader will win a carton of ice cream (plus one pack of novelties from the Blue Bunnyยฎmenu) delivered to their door every month for a year! I know. It’s like a dream. Free ice cream for a whole freakin’ year. Or you can also opt for lighter options like low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt.

To enter this week, just leave a comment on this post and tell me your favorite flavor of ice cream and whether you and your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/dog/bestfriend/doorman like the same kind. As for me, my husband like chocolate. I like mint chocolate chip. But somehow we still make our relationship work. I don’t know how we do it.

Good luck ice cream lovers.

Here are the winners of “Weeds” (Season 4): Becky, Nancy Walton and Melanie won the DVDs! Congrats ladies. Just send your name and address to Kelcey@mamabirddiaries.com.

Really, only one flavor? Vanilla…no chocolate chip cookie dough, ooohhhh, mint chocolate chip, or maybe rocky road (sigh) I can’t decide. I guess that’s why I leave it to my husband to buy ice cream (he prefers chocolate). He usually buys one chocolate and one vanilla, because our twins can’t decide on one flavor either (must be a decision gene lacking in us, LOL). The only one who can make a decision is the 14-yr.-old. He likes vanilla.

  • PAPA says:

hA, when I first read that I thought you said “Okay, I have to run the pack.” Meaning show those suburbs women a thing or too!

  • Mmm…ice cream. I like all sorts of kinds, chocolate peanut butter is one of my favoriates, but try to convince myself my favorite is non-fact plain frozen yogurt. My husband likes vanilla, with chocolate powder and milk all stirred up together, believe he call si the poor mans chocolate shake.

  • Tully's Mama says:

My husband’s favorite is seriously “Chubby Hubby” by Ben & Jerry’s. Mine is choc chip mint.

  • Jennifer H says:

Anywho is a deal-breaker, for sure. Those moms in the suburbs are officially on notice. None of this, “Anywho, let’s schedule that playdate for Tuesday.” NOT gonna fly, ladies.

  • I’m reading this laughing … at the fact you were as self absorbed as I was in my twenties… I mean it was a time about me, myself and I… and the man (of the moment) I was dating and he had better be dressed properly… I am laughing at the Helen Keller Song… Yes those Westchester Moms will be wowed by your Musical Prowess…this Connecticut Mom is. I prefer Mint Chocolate chip or Java Chocolate chip and my husband prefers Rocky Road. It’s perfect he doesn’t stick his grubby fat spoon in mine and I won’t stick my spoon in his!

Thank goodness for the blog world, btw… as I sit in bed with insomnia all upset and amazed that my Baby is graduating from his PreK-3 program… I mean he’s practically in college already. Where has the time gone?

  • BrooklynBaby says:

    Bunny… Super Chunky Cookie Dough
    Turkey Hill… Party Cake
    Breyers… Dulce de Leche

It’s OK if my spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/dog/bestfriend/doorman doesn’t like the same ones. That just means “more for me!!!!”

  • Jodi says:

    good luck with the move!
My favorite flavor is chocolate fudge brownie…..its so good. Craig loves chocolate peanut butter (but only when Jacob is not around b/c of the peanut allergy)!

  • Marinka says:

I love chocolate and my husband likes vanilla. I don’t understand or trust people who like vanilla. Well, I trust them enough to marry them, but I don’t trust them with the important stuff.

  • Dixie Chick says:

Very familiar sounding diary. It makes me want to go read mine to see exactly what I was putting. I prefer cookie dough ice cream and sadly I can tell you what my kids eat but not my husband. He would probably say whatever. He’s not that picky.

  • TRACI says:

The 303 songs makes me bonkers. Not quite as much as saying ‘anywho’ but a close second, for sure. Annnd, if I wasn’t lactose intolerant I would swim in vats of rocky road ice cream.

  • ShallowGal says:

If INS came by and asked us that question, we’d both be deported. I have no clue. Let’s just say that both of our favorite flavors are whatever is in the freezer that day.

  • Inna says:

the city people are gonna miss you Kelcey!
Anywho, my favorite ice cream is vanilla based with any assortment of extra stuff – dulce de leche, chocolate chips, nuts. But I make a mean avocado ice cream too! My McGee likes the same kind. I don’t think that’s such a good thing though, cause then we have to share.

  • linda says:

I have never met a cone I didn’t like and my husband sticks with strawberry. (I admit to never having avocado, though!)

  • Bitsy says:

Mmmm, ice cream. Neither of us can pick a favorite, but we really like making our own coffee and donut flavor at home in the ice cream maker. Yum. I don’t have journals to look back in, but I do remember all those dating days and it makes me thankful to be married!

  • KidSafe Mama says:

A few weeks ago as I was also doing the insane packing thing, my 14 year old daughter joined me while i was packing my drawer of old journals and various love letters from days of old. I realized I would be setting quite the shallow example as my journals from my 20s sound just like yours….except i discuss a lot about what food i ate while out with the leather vested anywho guy.
As for ice cream – mint choc chip or anything with coffee – both my kids are in agreement.

  • Meg says:

Mint Chocolate Chip for me too! Everyone else in my family says it tastes like Milk of Magnesia…but it works out, ’cause I don’t have to share the carton!

  • And that is why I destroyed all my old journals from high school and college. I read them once, gagged, and burned them in the barbecue.

I love mint chocolate chip, and my husband loves any ice cream that has chocolate covered nuts. We buy our own containers and get along just fine.

  • Becky says:

i love chocolate chip cookie dough and i think my husbands favorite is mint chocolate chip but it really depends on where we go for icecream

  • jean says:

Kelcey~You are so totally cool…my 23 year old daughter has a 3OH!3 bumper sticker on her Honda…You rock!

  • Sandrine says:

Coffee we are a coffee ice cream house…
    I feel so old 3OH!3 I hadn’t even heard of them…my poor sons…

  • Oz says:

That’s my area code, and I’ve never heard of that band. Oh, I am a dork.

I’m a mint chocolate chip girl, too, but I do not need an ice cream prize. I’m going to have baby weight to fight off!

  • MN Mama says:

With so many good flavors out there it seems somewhat unfair to have to pick one…. I think today I would pick caramel swirl. I do not eat ice cream a lot any more. I miss it.

  • E says:

Cotton candy, baby. And Ronnie eats sherberts and italian ices and stuff which makes me question his sanity. Says something about being lactose intolerant. ???? Which means the ice cream would be all for me!

  • Daphne says:

My own number starts 303 and I know nothing of the hot musical craze…but I do love ice cream. Both of us are fans of chunky monkey, but I love coconut, strawberry, chocolate, oooh and coffee heath bar and chocolate chip and mocha chip and I just love ice cream.

  • mackbeth says:

I wonder if you wore the sleeveless stone-washed denim vest on that very same date? Now THAT was a hot look! Coming at you from the Three Oh THree…maybe it was only in style here.

  • Chris says:

I’m glad you brought up the song “Don’t Trust Me”. I guiltily groove to it also, and wonder… isn’t this offensive? Am I missing something? But I like it. In an uncomfortable sort-of way.

    Happy packing!

  • Michelle says:

I Love Ice Cream, just about any kind. I’m torn about wantig to win, it’s a double edge sword! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • mom2tot says:

I love strawberry and my son doesn’t like ice cream, I know weird kid, anyway that’s totally ok since means more for me.

  • Attilla the Mum says:

Winning the ice cream contest would be a dream come true! That’s because we can’t EVER keep ice cream in our house long enough for me (the person who actually purchased the ice cream) to eat any!!! My son and I both adore all varieties of chocolate, and my husband is a sucker for creamy vanilla.

  • Jean E says:

I love all flavors, but if pressed, I guess coffee. My husband loves vanilla smothered in toppings! Thanks for making June fun and giving away ice cream! Good luck with packing.

  • ErinB says:

i heart mint choc chip or cookie dough…my hubby is rocky road. if I win the ice cream is going to my pregger sister cuz she can afford the calories more than me!!
    I never say anywho but am guilty of writing it in emails…I tend to ramble (shocker) and it kinda reels me back in. but i promise not to ever say it when we get together :-}

  • I love mint choc chip – and so does my son who calls it “green ice cream”. In fact we had some today after a traumatic blood work experience at the doctor. These truly are the memory making years…

  • Eunice B says:

My favorite is mint choc chip, but my dear husband’s is choc peanut butter cup…we get along fine though, and swap bites sometimes. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Sarah says:

I’m into Chunky Monkey or Phish Food, but my husband always gets Cherry Garcia because he knows I don’t like it and won’t eat any of it. I don’t think I’ve seen Blue Bunny out here (OR), but I’d love to try it!

  • SoMi's Nilsa says:

I’m sometimes embarrassed by the amount of knowledge I have of pop music. (It’s relatively small amount, but it’s more than I’d care to admit.) But, so long as the soon to be soccer mom sporting a minivan knows more than me, I think I’m in good standing. =)

  • Vicki says:

I am all about mint chip. My husband likes anything chocolate. I do too, but mint chip is my go-to flavour. If anyone finds Extreme Moose Tracks at their local grocery store, buy it. It’s a chocoholics paradise!

  • Renee says:

I love coffee ice cream with anything in it, like chocolate light houses, brownie bits, pieces of oreo cookie, fudge… Did I mention I’m pregnant and crave ice cream every day? I’m sure this craving will last at least a year. My husband does not like coffee anything, so this should work out perfectly!!!

  • Becky says:

I could not agree more about the 3OH3 song. I listen to it until the helen keller part comes on and then I turn to another station!
And, I love chocolate chip or cherry vanilla and my husband only eats chocolate and/or peanutbutter ice cream ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • kerry says:

did you keep a journal while in madrid? i would love to hear all of your spanish angst!

you are going to rock the ‘burbs.

  • Susan @ 2KoP says:

Must say I love the chocolates: Superfudge Brownie and Toasted Almond Fudge, plus the Homemade Chocolate. My DH loves strawberry and the gang goes for traditional vanilla so they can add their own goodies.

  • misty says:

that song is offensive. The first time I heard it was with the chorus sung to me by a 5 year old. I kept asking her to repeat what she said because surely- she wasn’t saying what it sounded like.

    but she was.

  • Aimee says:

My diary read like that when I was in high school! I was so super boy crazy! I also happened to work at the ice cream joint across the street from my house! I was a master at working the scooper with short shorts on and VERY teased hair (hey it was the 90’s). I always slipped a free ice cream to the boy I liked (or the “flavor of the month”) when he came to my window. Little did he know I had to pay it out of my tip jar at the end of the night! With the way I liked boys I never made much on tips for college–but I DID get to feast on as much ice cream as I wanted. Every time I return to Rhode Island I visit the ol’ ice cream joint and STILL get the SAME kind–Peanut Butter Cup! Freaken YUM! Just now instead of handing over free cones, I share mine with my fantastic husband who loves it just the same–that’s why he was never the flavor of the month and is the cool core of our ever lasting love!

I am hoping this week is my lucky week–a new baby and FREE ice cream would friggen ROCK!

  • Miranda says:

My two year old loves that 3OH3! song…he won’t let me change it once it comes on…that and The Black Eyed Pea’s Boom Boom Pow.
Don’t Trust Me is my best friend’s ringtone all because “you can’t trust a ho, never trust a ho”
My favorite ice cream is chocolate peanut butter, and my hubby’s is cookie dough.

  • shay says:

you would impress me with your great coolness and song knowledge. I’m not even as cool as the suburb moms though. I’m a country mom! YIKE! lol
And a leather vest and the term “anywho”????? Wow. Just wow.

  • johanna says:

Sounds like my old “journals”…I had alot to say about the boys then and not much else was documented!! Ha! I will always over and over pick mint chocolate chip but my husband will always pick cookie dough. The chunks of dough that actually taste raw and sugary kinda skeeve me out!

  • Teresa says:

I love choc chip my significnt other is into anthing choc, rocky road, or anything w/ peanut butter YUCK

  • Denise says:

I’m a huge mint chocolate chip fan, the hubby adores peanut butter cup. I have to admit, I don’t discriminate, I’ll eat any flavor!

    When is the big move?

  • Shana says:

I love that song! Tho I was slightly disturbed when I heard my daughter singing what sounded like “Don’t trust a ‘ho, never trust a ‘ho.” Then we switched back to Radio frigging Disney, the bane of my existence.

PS: You? Will totally rock the ‘burbs.

  • Halala Mama says:

Ahh that song! Have you seen the video? I am oddly intrigued by the moderate hotness post-college-frat-boy look of one of the singers. But the song…yeah, it’s lyrics are repulsive! It’s an odd combination.
