Where is my husband? I’ve been waiting for days for his arrival in Italy and he’s just not here. In all fairness, he’s not actually supposed to fly in until Saturday. You know, something about work and all. Ok… I just miss him. And my New York Post. But you know, mostly him.
We are now settled in lovely, beautiful Polignano a Mare, an ancient town, originally built by the Greeks, on the Adriatic coast (Yes, I’m also writing travel tour books while I’m here.).
My dad and I have decided to absolutely take up smoking. It’s very cool here. Really, everyone is doing it. And no nasty U.S. stigma to worry about. And I’m guessing trans fats are running wild in these parts too. Although I bet New York City Mayor Bloomberg could get this place cleaned up in a couple weeks.
I’ve kept the girls on New York City time so they basically go to bed around midnight local time. Dylan and Summer can’t believe they are hanging out in the piazza, looking at the stars and dancing in wine bars late night. Italy is definitely working for them.
When Dylan’s not parading around the ancient streets of Polignano in her princess heels….
she’s taking her shoes off. In fact, Dylan and Summer are relentless in their distaste for footwear these days.
So we are doing an enormous amount of foot washing.
Oh, and the gelato thing is a bit out of control. The girls had gelato for breakfast the other day. I’m not sure how it happened. They were tired, one of them was crying and of course, there is a gelato place like every point four kilometers. And damn, it just makes them so insanely, immediately happy.
Plus, doesn’t “gelato” sounds so much more nutritious than “ice cream?”
My dad and I did bring along some yoga DVDs but so far I have not done one downward dog on Italian soil. With all the eating, drinking and smoking – honestly, who can find the time? So now you understand why I had so much luggage. Yeah, the yoga DVDs took up an incredible amount of room.
You know I’m not really smoking, right?!
Oh great, just as you’re picking up the habit, I’m putting it down! Dang! π
You know what dirty feet signify? That life is too short for uncomfortable foot confinement!
You’re reminding me of “eat, pray, love” and so I’ll leave you with a friend’s mantra: “get it into ya!”
It’s okay that I hate you just a little bit right now, right?
::green with envy::
I call those dirty feet seven-11 feet. Where I am from you always saw people hanging out at seven-11 with dirty feet… so bring on the slurpies or gelato.
Italy’s all right, if you like gorgeous scenery and great food…
i heart italy.
I am so happy that you clarified the “not really smoking” thing. I was really upset! Glad you’re having a great time!! Enjoy.
Sounds like an amazing trip. And gelato is definitely much better for you than ice cream because, um, it’s Italian! If you teach the kids to say the flavors in Italian than you can totally justify eating gelato for every meal! (that’s what we did in Italy, though unfortunately it’s the only thing our kids remembered from the trip)
i didn\\\’t know you were going to ITALY!?!!!! awesome!!! continue to have a ball – and lots of gelato – for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
well you SAY you’re not smoking…;p
You’ll let us know the minute you see Marcello from Under the Tuscan Sun, right? Or anyone who looks even a little bit like him?
(Seriously, where are the pics of hot Italian men? Counting on you…)
Whenever I go to Italy I have to wean myself back onto ‘proper’ food gradually. Gelato is good…
I love the fact that they’ve rejected shoes.
Italy is just amazing.
Kelcey!!!! You are funny!!!!! My kid’s LOVE gelato too!! It’s much more nutritious than ice cream!!!! And girl, you have quite the nice Yoga butt!!! Careful of those ho#n* Italians cause you know thats what their looking at!!! Have fun. Let me know when you make U.S. soil again- I owe you a welcome home present!!! (Haven’t forgot)
Another great picture of the girls! Love the dirty feet… A sign that life is good there.
Your in Italy alright!
Enjoy.
PS We once debated driving to Florence from Rome at 2am for “the best gelato in all of Italy”, but decided not to.
I love those dirty feet! So cute!
Oh and really Gelato IS healthier than ice cream so EAT UP!
My boys hate shoes. The only ones I can get them to wear in the summer are Crocs. Smoking does look cooler in Italy. When my dad was growing up there, he’d covet Marlboro’s–go figure.
I’m so jealous…not just of Italy, but that of anyone that can get away with bare feet all the time. While I love shoes of all shapes and sizes, I really like bare feet the best. And dancing late into the night at wine bars, my seven year old would be down for that one.
Smoking looks so romantic when it isn’t too close to me and I don’t have to taste it on someone’s breath.
I thought the luggage contained toilet paper and Euros…Have fun..don’t drink the water or eat the Men. Those were the instructions we got when my ‘ Hot Friend’ Pearl and I left to go to Europe 47 years ago.
I noticed the smoking too while in Italy, how can you not when EVERYONE does it. Looks like you guys are having fun and tomorrow your husband joins you! Love the photos!
Been on either sides, never Italy itself. Oh how I’d like to be “cool” right now and be there. Pining
Isn’t it funny how Italians can make something like smoking appealing? I’m so jealous but happy that you are adjusting – I consider gelato for breakfast totally adjusting π
just color me jealous…have a great time!
oooh you just make me laugh….the smoking, the dirty feet, the endless gelato! am enjoying visiting Italy through you :-}
be safe, have fun and say hi to the chicken man when he arrives! xo
Lucky you!
Kelcey – I am loving these little stories. I wish I could go to Italy someday. You should write a fun family travel piece for a magazine or something. To translate now that I am sure you’re bilingual: Amo le sue piccole storie. Desidero che potrei andare all’Italia del giorno. Lei dovrebbe scrivere un pezzo di viaggio di famiglia divertente per una rivista o qualcosa. I am happy Rick comes soon, not just for the girls but to keep the uomos caldo italiano away from the il biondo caldo da New York. (the hot Italians away from the hot blond from New York) Enjoy!!
Italy schmitaly. We are not jealous even one little tiny bit.
Sounds like the trip has gotten better! π I am sure that gelato is more nutritious than ice cream. Hope Rick has arrived safely by now.
Oh wow. What an awesome experience for you and the girls! These are the things memories are made of: gelato for breakfast and dancing barefoot under the stars.
I’m so jealous! Have some pizza for me!
Um…still jealous.
You have just got to be the most rocking it mama on the planet. I want to BE one of your little girls. They look like they are having so much fun! Keep enjoying. I’m doing the vicarious thing from this side of the pond.
That sounds utterly heavenly. Especially the midnight dancing and the gelato. Enjoy the rest of the trip!
Oh, this all looks like so much fun!
I guess the multiple suitcases were for all of the fashion princess footwear that you brought (but is now rejected). Hey, we girls like to be over-prepared, not under, right?
girls got cute dirty feet realy funny send me some dirty feet images
