4% doesn’t feel so good
If you are looking for calmness in the last week of the campaign, keep moving because you won’t find it here. I actually specialize in hysteria these days. It’s sort of an underrated, niche field.
I am sick to my stomach about the new polls showing Obama only 4% points ahead. So I decided I was tired of all the Reauters/C-SPAN/Zogby polls and damn it, I’ll just do my own polling.
Now I didn’t actually talk to anyone (with my weekly phone banking, I’ve sort have gotten my fill of “Hi Stranger” contact). But as I passed folks on the street, I did really focus on their political vibe.
Based on this scientific analysis with perhaps a slight margin of error, Obama has about a 97% lead here in Manhattan’s West Village.
Do the rest of you have to vote?
I keep emailing my friends and asking… So is Obama going to win? As if they have some kind of magic, insider knowledge that I’m just not privy to.
And it’s not like I don’t have other crap to worry about.
For example, I’ve really slacked off when it comes to worrying about Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman. Are they really back together? I mean, I just love that couple. They belong together, don’t they?
Or I could be troubled by conversations like this with 4 year-old Dylan:
“I’m the mommy. And Summer is my baby. Ok?” Dylan says as we sit down to play.
“Ok. That sounds good,” I respond.
“And you can be the grandmother,” Dylan explains.
“Do you think I’m old enough to be a grandmother?”
“Yes, I do,” Dylan insists.
Hmm…
Or I could be concerned about these two guys who suddenly appeared without any notice on my 5th floor balcony.
They looked pretty legit with their brushes and goggles. I figured they must be fixing something.
But how did they get up there exactly?
No, no I didn’t concern myself with any of the details. I just waved and went back to cleaning up the apartment and checking polls on Real Clear Politics.
Ok, there’s only one week left and after the election, I positively, absolutely promise you that I will end this nonstop political obsession. So hang in there. We just gotta close this deal.

Ditto on all the above comments. My ballot was turned in this morning and I got nervous and excited and a little bit sick to my stomach all at once. Seriously, that was all because I dropped it off. LOL Is it Nov. 5th yet?

I also find myself getting more and more anxious for election day. Though I’m terribly excited and I can’t wait because I know Obama’s campaign has worked so hard and achieved so much, I feel terrified with a true distrust of the system. Obama’s intelligence and genuine leadership could lead this country out of the funk we’ve been stewing in for the past eight years. And even without closing the book on a heinous chapter of our nation’s history, getting the US back on track with intelligent leadership would be historical in itself. I’m praying it’s not too good to be true.

I mailed my ballot weeks ago (absentee) and I’m worried about it going through! I’ve heard that if you have one dot out of place, it gets thrown out…

I made my husband turn off the news last night, I just can’t take it anymore and I’m looking forward to next wednesday because at least it will be over!
although i may have a new reason to be sick to my stomach…please let the west village be the barometer of this election.

Remember, it’s not about the polls, it’s about that ridiculously outdated electoral college, which shows Obama having many more than McCain in the states he has ‘locked’ so don’t sweat it sweetie!

I’m sweating today as I wake up seeing that Obama has only a 4 point lead now in the polls… Next Wednesday needs to be now! I am however, the ultimate optimist and am planning my stay in DC for the inaugural festivities!! Go Obama!!

If there’s a repeat of 04, I don’t know what I’ll do. At this point I’m cautiously optimistic Obama is going to win, but that’s why I’m volunteering for Obama Saturday. I just want to feel like I’ve done all I can.

I am right there with you. The NY Times had an article yesterday on pre-election anxiety (I think they stole it from you). 4% is NOT a comfortable enough lead — I still don’t trust Florida.

the general gallop poll yesterday showed only a two point spread.
perhaps the truth of obama’s freakishly scary socialist ways are starting to “oops” seep out to the american people. now you are rich if you are a couple making 150k? can’t wait until people learn that conservative republicans give over FIVE times more to charity than liberals. how about you let us decide what we want to give?

What’s “freakishly scary” to me is John McCain’s temperament. He openly acknowledges, appears even to take pride in the fact, that he makes decisions quickly and then “lives with the consequences”. The last thing this country needs is another shoot-from-the-hip presdient. That’s not leadership, rather a formula for disaster, of which we’ve had more than enough during the past eight years. I want my president to consider decisions thoughtfully, and then act decisively. Barack Obama demonstrates that he has that capacity. John McCain admits that he does not. Now that’s scary.

On my side of the river it’s 120% OBAMA, I’m so nervous and I can’t even vote. I just can’t imagine waking up to a McCain-Palin win. I grew up in a socialist country and there’s nothing wrong with that, aren’t we teaching our children to share all the time?

actually sandrine, i teach my children to do their best, love one another and help those in need.
i don’t teach them to take from one hard working person and give to another.
i REALLY don’t teach them it is ok to take from one and spend that money on abortion clinics against that person’s will.

I was not familiar with Real Clear Politics, but since I read your post at 9 am this morning I’ve been obsessing over it, and sent it to my equally-obsessed husband. I love the area where you can see the electoral maps from the last 10 Presidential electrions — it is interesting to see how things have changed over the years (Texas used to be blue, for example). Note that Virginia is red red red for the past 10 years, but we’re hoping to change it in ’08 — Obama is up 7 points here and held a rally yesterday in Harrisonburg. The last Presidential candidate to campaign there was Stephen Douglas when he ran against Abe Lincoln!

As much as I adore Sandrine, I have no interest in living in a socialist country. Labeling Obama a “socialist” is just a Republican tactic to try to win this election. There is no truth to it whatsoever. Obama will cut taxes for 95% of workers and their families.
House of 6 – I always welcome different viewpoints on this blog but why can’t you state your views in a more respectful manner. You always seem to rely on name calling and distortions. If your candidate is so right for this country, why do you even have to go there?

It feels as though Obama will also take the swing state of Colorado. Everyone needs to get out and VOTE! That will give us the best results of all…I listened to Obama this morning in a radio interview here (KBCO 97.3) and he said he is excited about the hysteria. This is the best of the best when everyone is dialed in and fighting for their side. America will be best when everyone is involved in the democratic process. I am also not interested in Socialism – that isn’t even a fair argument. Let’s hope we see a huge turnout then we can all feel good about the outcome whichever way it ends.

kelcey – i do love you, but am so frustrated that my comments are viewed as negative and disrespectful. if we pulled the comments from all posters on both sides of the political arena and held them side by side, i feel it would be clear who is more disrespectful of who. it is just more apparent when someone with an opposite view makes a post, then it really stands out.
and again, for people who insist on bringing up bush, please realize there is a democratic majority in the congress and they are the ones who make things happen.
quality people like pelosi, frank, dodd, reid. lets see what the country will be like in four years with obama in charge and those libs behind him, and then throw in a liberal supreme court to twist our constitution into what they want.

I’m nervous too. I won’t feel comfortable until it is completely over and a clear winner is declared. (Hopefully Obama!) I did early voting in TX yesterday, and the computers were down. It took forever to vote, it was a major glitch. That sort of stuff just freaks me out. I am totally on edge. I am also in a sea of Obama supporters here in Austin, but leave the city limits and it’s majority McCain/Palin supporters. yikes.

I am going to have to agree with House of 6 on this one. The majority of the democrats on here are very hateful and disrespectful of our candidate and have not held back one bit on bashing him and his campaign every chance they get. I guess you are turning a blind eye to his, Kelcey, since they are on “your side”. Take your father’s comment for instance. Wow! You’re right…you guys are just dripping with respect of our candidate. I have enjoyed the view points and FACTS that House of 6 has brought to this forum. I can hardly believe the political talk on this blog will end after Nov. 4th. I will believe it when I see it. Polls in NYC don’t matter, it’s Obama all the way for the State. Same in California. We’re LIBERAL. Voting now in S.F. for decriminalizing prostitution, and the up-tight right-wing jerks managed to get it on the ballot for eliminating Gay Marriage in California, which it is NOW. They think it’s about ‘religion’, ‘the Bible’, and ‘God’ when it’s simply letting people have the same basic rights as straight couples do when they form a ‘marriage’ which is a civil union/partnership (as the government sees it). Gives them the right to pass on social security benefits, not have to pay inheritance tax when one dies and the estate passes on to the surviving spouse…and some other ‘perks’. Elizabeth Taylor in her 8th marriage to a man 25 years younger than she was, that she met in a Rehab Center had more rights in her marriage to him than a Gay couple living together for 25 years. No clergy are ever forced to perform GAY MARRIAGES if it goes against their religious beliefs…yet they would deny people who are BORN HOMOSEXUAL (who would choose to be ‘gay’?)…their rights as a couple.

What freaks me out about the pools is the scary reality that obama could well win the popular vote by quite a bit, but still lose in the electoral college numbers…
