Here's another vote for The Paper Bag Princess! Not a princess themed book, but also very empowering is The Dot by Peter Reynolds - just the sweetest story. I had tears in my eyes the first time I read it.

Some other good ones are:

Cinderedna; Once Upon a Princess and a Pea; and Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter. Not sure of the authors, but most libraries have them available.

I'm glad you brought that up about the "true happiness is found by loving God" because that is the one line that I did not love in the book. It should have been left out. I agree.

I'm not a big fan of the princess stuff either - but Paper Bag Princess is my fave. There are also some great princess tales by Gail Carson Levine (author of Ella Enchanted - a much better book than movie) that are really good too.

This one doesn't quite grab me - probably because the fairy godmother says that "true happiness is found by loving God" and I'd rather my daughter find her own spirituality without any pressure or judgment.
