My child often INSISTS that she is full but hardly eats enough to sustain a flea. Even the promise of a delicious dessert doesn’t get her going. I, on the other hand, am unable to say no to a cookie even if I’m stuffed to the gills. How do I motivate my child to eat more? Or is this something she’ll outgrow? I’m exhausted from trying to get her to eat more. Help me mamas!

    1st of all, don't worry about it. No kid ever starved themselves. If you want to entice them to try a new food, kids find toothpicks irresistable! Also, making food into fun shapes (like a thinly length-wise sliced banana with raisin eyes to look like a snake or with peanut butter spikes to make it look like an alligator) I used to cut sandwiches into fun shapes and use it as a chance to teach about stars or 1/2 moons etc. But really really, if she is eating somewhat healthy stuff, it doesn't take much to fill a tiny belly. My kids were never big eaters, and they have not turned out to be psychopaths (which is really all you need to be concerned with when you think about it.)

    Franny is right. Don't try to force her to eat more than she needs. That's why we are all overweight!! We were taught to keep eating after we were full. Just offer healthy, fun choices and leave the rest to her. And don't forget that little ones need a little bit every 3 hours or so.

    How old is the little one? Different methods may work at different ages. Choices are important and putting out tidbits every two to three hours will also help. Something else to try is to get your little one involved in the shopping and cooking. Kids love to eat what they cook.

    frannie is totally right about the toothpicks… it is so much fun for them to pick up the food w/a toothpick and put it in their mouth (also easier than a fork to use).. also, dipping is fun for kids. you can dip into pretty much anything.. applesauce, ketchup, salad dressing… that makes eating more fun too… depending on age, can even dip into pureed veggies (sounds gross to us, but fun activity for them).. also, remember portion size is still the size of THEIR palm.. that is tiny when you look at it.. they don't require so much food. the best advice i can give you is not to force feed.. this will cause problems later.. keep trying to make feeding fun and pleasant and offer colorful, nutritious (sp?) foods!! it is probably a phase that will pass too.. hang in there!

    I tried something today and it worked so I thought I would pass it along. I had my daughter give me a bite than I asked her to eat a bite. It worked and she ate her food! Yippee!
